At the inaugural meeting held in the school room at Mowbray Public School on Wednesday 10th July 1963, Mr Jack N.C. Gay addressed the issue of a shortage of soccer teams available to local children. A junior soccer team had been run by Mr Bob Watts under the name of “The Northern Rovers” but Mr Watts was not able to continue with this. Mr Gay had approached Mowbray Public School ‘s Headmaster, Mr H. L. Parker whose inquiries from the school children revealed a strong interest in both cricket and soccer. With such an enthusiastic response from both parents and children, it was decided to form a sports club for boys and girls.
At the Committee Meeting on 8th August 1963, a number of names were put forward for the club. These names were as a result of a survey of local children and parents. While initially no suitable name was forthcoming, the committee agreed to adopt the name “Vanguard”. Vanguard was later changed to Mowbray Rovers Sports Club, and at a later meeting on 30th August 1963, this was changed to “The Rangers Sports Club”. It was decided the club colours would be Royal Blue and White and a dragon ship would be the club’s ensignia.
In an attempt to gather more support from the local community, and to firm up where the club was based, the name “Chatswood Rangers Sports Club” was put forward and passed by vote in 1988. The original insignia was updated in 1997 and was designed by a well known member of the soccer club, Joe Butler. Joe liked the insignia so much that he has it tattooed on his chest! The new insignia was used first by the senior soccer teams and then by the junior soccer teams as well as netball teams.
The founding office bearers were:
President – Mr A.A.Herbert
Vice President – Mr J.N.C. Gay Secretary
Mrs. Gladys Tapper Treasurer
Mr B. Scott Teams Manager
Mr J.N.C. Gay Committee Members
Mr John Farac
Mrs Margaret Gay
Mr Peter Mullins
Mr Ken Stacey
Mr Cyril Williams.
At a subsequent meeting, Mr. G. Mortimer was appointed the official Publicity Officer of the Club.
The first fund raising event was to be a variety concert suggested by Mr Enzo Toppano who offered to approach leading television and radio stars to participate. Due to the work of Enzo, he was elected as an Honorary Vice President.
The first AGM of the Ranger’s Sports Club was held at Mowbray Public School on the 31st July 1964. In its first year the Club formed teams for cricket and soccer with the soccer teams consisting Under 9 (x2), Under 10, Under 12 & Under 14.
Rangers commenced with the North Western Soccer Association in 1966. Basketball was initially played in the Baptist Women’s Association and then netball in the Northern Suburbs Association in 1966. In 1974 Rangers Netball moved to Hallstrom Park, Naremburn.
By 1987, Rangers consisted of cricket, athletics, table tennis, basketball, netball and soccer teams.
Chatswood Rangers Sports Club currently has in excess of 700 members across football and netball. Based on senior premierships, Rangers is the most successful football club in the Northern Suburbs Football Association with 27 titles and have won many titles in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association.

HOW TEAMS ARE FORMED:
Chatswood Rangers and the Northern Suburbs Football Association believes it is in the best interest of all players that, where possible, they play with and against players of similar ability, we therefore undertake varying degrees of player grading across our junior teams.
In 2024 Chatswood Rangers will take the following approach to team formation:
Under 6 and 7 Teams are typically formed on school and friendship groups, so please let us know if you would like to be grouped with certain players. Any player not assigned to a school or friendship team will be allocated a place in one of the remaining teams. Under 8 and above An A and, where player competence permits, a B team will be selected as 'Development Squads' following trials. Where player numbers, permit other teams will be formed as 'Community Teams'. We encourage players and managers to inform us of team formation requests, which may include school, community and friendship affiliations. Any player not assigned to a school or friendship team will be allocated a place in one of the remaining teams.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT:
As a not-for-profit, we rely on the collective strength of our club members to continue to make Chatswood Rangers successful, fun and rewarding for everyone. It is also a great way to be more involved with your child’s team and the community. At a team level, each team will need a manager and a coach, and a game leader (referee) for Miniroos.
At a club level, we are building a sub-committee structure to enable Junior Football to support the , bring diversity of ideas and improve the delivery of the football program for all.
Junior Football programming requires the following roles to support our players:
- Female Football Coordinator
- Football Development Coordinator
- Mini-Roos (U6-U11) Coordinator

Coaches
Although we would love to be able to appoint a coach to each team, it can be quite challenging to find these coaches. If you, a parent, partner or friend are interested in coaching a team – whether it be a senior or junior team, we would love to hear from you!
You will be giving players the best chance of developing and furthering their skills in the game and may motivate them to go to further heights than they thought they were able.
There are several clinics during the season for to coach the coaches and the Club will subsidise the cost of any clinic or accreditation course attended and also provide any other support needed to help you help our members.
Managers
Each team MUST have a Team Manager in Seniors - this is often a player on your team. The main responsibilities of the Manager is to ensure you have enough players each week, bring the kit bag to games and to ensure each player on your team has a BLUE ID card at every game.
Please consult the checklist & responsibilities below for further information.
A team manager roughly gives 1 hour a week to management responsibilities during game season.

The competition is played during the winter months, with games commencing in April and running through until August/September. Matches and training are not scheduled during the school holidays. All matches and training are played at the Bicentennial Netball Courts at Small St Willoughby (adjacent to the Willoughby Leisure Centre).
The Junior Netball Program includes:
Net Set Go – for girls and boys aged 7 to 9 years old (and children turning 6 years old who are in Year 1 of school).
Net Set Go is an introductory program for children to develop basic netball skills whilst making new friends, developing their social skills and most importantly… having FUN !
Training for Net Set Go teams is at 5:30 – 6:30 pm on Wednesday evenings.
Matches for Net Set Go are played on Sunday mornings (times TBA)
Junior Netball – is for girls aged 10 to 15 years old.
No prior netball experience is necessary - everyone is welcome to register and play netball with Chatswood Rangers. Before the start of the winter competition, pre-season grading and training sessions will be held in February & March. This will allow for all girls to be placed into a team that is suitable for their skill level, and also provides an opportunity for the girls to learn the basics of the game and to get to know their coach and team mates before the actual competition commences.
Please note that all girls who register will be placed in a team.
Training is on Wednesday evenings – Ages 10 & 11 at 5:30 pm, and ages 12 to 15 at 6:30 pm
Matches for ages 10 to 12 years are played on Friday evenings and for ages 13 to 15 years are on Saturday mornings.
Chatswood Rangers Junior Netball plays in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association (NSNA) competition. For specific NSNA competition information/rules please refer to the NSNA website
Why play netball?
Netball is a fantastic game! Not only is it played throughout Australia and New Zealand but also many other parts of the world as diverse as Africa, Asia, the UK and Europe, North America and the Caribbean. It doesn’t matter what level of skill or fitness you have or whether or not you have played before. Did you know that netball is the team sport with the most number of participants in Australia, not just among females but for both genders?
Netball leads to improved fitness levels, encourages the learning of ball skills and helps to develop teamwork. Just as importantly players make new friends, improve their co-ordination and increase their self-confidence whilst having a lot of fun at the same time.
At Chatswood Rangers Junior Netball, we’re passionate about our daughters, their friends and other local children having a strong and viable local community sporting club to represent. We have girls from a large number of local primary and high schools playing for the club, including Artarmon, Chatswood, Lane Cove West, Mowbray, Roseville, Lindfield Learning Village and many others. Chatswood Rangers offers a friendly and more personal club, with the opportunity for the players to learn under great coaches and umpires in the game. As Rangers is a community rather than school club it gives the players the chance to meet girls from other schools and make many new friends.
Our main focus is grassroots participation and encouraging girls to enjoy a healthy lifestyle by participating in a team sport activity, particularly as they move into their teenage years. Chatswood Rangers is not only a friendly community club but we’re also very competitive on the court! We’re always proud of our players who make the representative teams and go on to win local awards, as several Rangers players and officials have done in recent years.
