Rangers RAP – 23/08/2024

August 23, 2024

I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful weather and makes it along to some final rounds, Gala Days and division finals this weekend. It has been a testing season with so much wet weather but everyone involved has soldiered on and made the most of things. Thank you everyone for your ongoing efforts!

The Committee and I look forward to celebrating the end of season with players, managers, coaches and supporters at the upcoming end of season events – take a look at messages from the Secretaries regarding the details.

While it is not netball or soccer related, last Sunday I did enjoy an afternoon at North Sydney Oval watching the local league team North Sydney Bears take on Penrith. It was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon with the most amazing community vibe around the grounds. Many families took the opportunity to enjoy the great weather and comfortable grounds…and I definitely saw a few Rangers members there. Their next match is a 7:30pm kick off on Saturday 31st August against the Newcastle Knights, I encourage you to get along and support another local sporting Club. Adults $15, Concession $8 and kids under 16 are FREE! It’s a great deal.

Have a fantastic weekend of sport!!

junior football

It was inevitable that it rained last weekend, and some matches got cancelled 😭  Unfortunately it just summed up the season we have had.  As frustrating as it has been, I do hope everyone has enjoyed their training sessions, matches and team spirit over the season. 💙💙💙

With this weekend being GALA weekend for many teams and finals for others, take the opportunity to enjoy the weekend and discuss plans for next season, including keeping your squads together in the off-season.  Rangers have plenty of activities coming up that players can register for and their are small-sided competitions being run at various grounds that you can choose to enter teams into.

Net Set Go Gala Day – Sunday 28 August

A reminder for our Net Set Go teams about Gala Day this Sunday. All teams will play a series of three short games, followed by award presentations. All of our NSG players have shown enormous improvement in their skills over the season.

Thank you to our NSG coaches for your hard work and dedication to our most junior players.  It is obvious when watching the Rangers NSG teams play netball that the coaches have taken the time to teach and reinforce to our players, the rules around player contact, obstruction, and keeping good distance.  This is an important aspect of NSG for player safety and enjoyment. Setting good habits with these rules will serve our players well when they move up junior netball.

Junior Netball Presentation Day

Please save the date…Sunday 22nd September 2024.

Arrangements are being finalised.  Details will be provided via email in coming days.

NSNA Twilight Competition

A reminder to register your interest for the Spring Twilight Competition by Friday 13 September.  Information and forms for expression of interest can be found on the NSNA Website.

Understanding Relative Energy Deficit in Sports: A Guide for Young Athletes and Their Support Systems

In the realm of sports and athletic performance, maintaining optimal health is crucial for achieving success and avoiding injury. One critical yet often overlooked aspect of athletic health is Relative Energy Deficit in Sports (RED-S). Understanding what RED-S is and why it matters can significantly impact young athletes’ performance and overall well-being.

What is Relative Energy Deficit in Sports (RED-S)?

Relative Energy Deficit in Sports (RED-S) is a condition that occurs when an athlete’s energy intake (the calories consumed) does not meet their energy expenditure (the calories burned through physical activity and metabolic processes). This imbalance can result from insufficient caloric intake, excessive training, or a combination of both. When energy availability is too low, it affects not only athletic performance but also overall health.

Key Components of RED-S:

  1. Energy Availability: This is the difference between the energy consumed and the energy expended during training and daily. When energy availability is low, the body struggles to perform its regular functions and maintain health.
  2. Metabolic Rate: A reduced energy availability can lead to a decrease in metabolic rate, affecting how efficiently the body uses and stores energy.
  3. Hormonal Imbalance: Insufficient energy intake can disrupt the balance of hormones like oestrogen and testosterone, which are essential for various bodily functions, including growth and recovery.
  4. Physiological Consequences:RED-S can lead to a range of issues, including decreased bone density, impaired immune function, and delayed recovery from injuries.

Why is RED-S Important for Young Athletes?

For young athletes, maintaining adequate energy levels is vital for several reasons:

  1. Growth and Development: Adolescents are still growing, and their bodies require sufficient energy to support normal development, including bone growth, muscle development, and hormonal changes. RED-S can interfere with this process, potentially leading to long-term health issues.
  2. Performance: Adequate energy supports optimal performance. Energy deficits can lead to decreased endurance, strength, and overall athletic ability, affecting performance on the field or
  3. Injury Prevention: Low energy availability increases the risk of Muscles, ligaments, and bones are more susceptible to damage when the body is not receiving enough fuel to maintain their strength and resilience.
  4. Mental Health: Energy deficits can also impact mental health, leading to issues like fatigue, irritability, and decreased motivation. Maintaining a balanced energy intake helps support a positive mindset and overall mental well-being.
  5. Recovery: Adequate energy is crucial for recovery after intense training or competition. Without enough fuel, the body struggles to repair tissues and restore energy levels, leading to longer recovery times and increased risk of overuse injuries.

How to Prevent RED-S

Prevention is key to avoiding RED-S and ensuring a healthy, successful athletic career. Here are some strategies for young athletes, coaches, and parents:

  1. Balanced Nutrition: Ensure that the diet includes a sufficient number of calories and nutrients to meet the demands of training and daily This includes carbohydrates for energy, proteins for muscle repair, and fats for overall health.
  2. Regular Monitoring: Keep track of training intensity and duration, and monitor energy intake to ensure it matches the demands of the sport. Professional guidance from a sports nutritionist can be beneficial.
  3. Education: Educate young athletes about the importance of nutrition and energy balance. Empowering them with knowledge helps them make informed decisions about their dietary and training habits.
  4. Open Communication: Foster an environment where athletes feel comfortable discussing their energy levels, training loads, and any concerns they might have about their health or
  5. Rest and Recovery: Emphasise the importance of rest and recovery as part of the training regimen. Adequate sleep and recovery time are essential for overall health and performance.

In summary, understanding and addressing Relative Energy Deficit in Sports is crucial for young athletes striving for peak performance while maintaining their health. By ensuring adequate energy intake, monitoring training loads, and prioritising overall well-being, athletes can achieve their goals while minimising the risk of injuries and long-term health issues.
